VW Crafter camper conversion: a customized dream camper in 5 months
From a bare van to a self-sufficient off-road camper: Tom and David converted their VW Crafter 4Motion into a customized home on wheels in just five months.
The two friends Tom and David had a clear vision: maximum freedom, full self-sufficiency and a well thought-out interior for adventures all over Europe. However, a project of this magnitude requires not only creativity and craftsmanship - but also powerful tools.
This is exactly where the solutions from RUKO came into play. Whether roof window, external socket, roof rack or drop-down bed: precise drilling, clean feed-throughs and reliable machining were crucial for almost every step of the work.
From van to off-road camper
Within just five months, a VW Crafter 4Motion was transformed into a fully equipped off-road campervan for up to three people. The aim was to build a flexible and self-sufficient campervan that works reliably both in everyday life and on long journeys.
The interior should not only be functional, but also comfortable and robust. A flexible space concept, a reliable power supply and sufficient storage space for longer adventure trips were particularly important.
It became clear early on that a campervan conversion of this size requires precise tools and clean work steps to ensure that everything works reliably in the end.
The requirements for the camper conversion
The conversion involved numerous trades - from bodywork and electrics to furniture construction. At the same time, the camper also had to be prepared for remote pitches and long journeys.
The most important requirements for the conversion:
- Self-sufficient power supply
- Space-saving room concept
- Robust off-road equipment
- Comfortable interior fittings
- Flexible sleeping solution with a fold-down bed
These requirements had to be combined in a confined space and placed high demands on planning, material selection and craftsmanship.
After rust protection of the cavities, the interior was insulated with Armaflex, felted and fitted with a wood-look PVC floor. Acoustic panels were added to make the living space much more pleasant.
The centrepiece of the power supply is an Ective AccuBox 200S with a capacity of 2560 Wh. Three additional 200W PV modules on the self-constructed roof rack made of black aluminium profiles ensure maximum self-sufficiency on the road.
The exterior of the Crafter has also been consistently designed for adventure: All-terrain tyres on black aluminium rims and a robust awning make the camper ready for remote pitches on the coasts of Europe.
The conversion shows how much planning, precision and craftsmanship goes into a customized camper project.
Precision with every drill hole: RUKO in action
Precise work is crucial for stability, safety and later suitability for everyday use, especially when converting camper vans. Clean drill holes are particularly important when working on the body panels, roof and vehicle floor.
Precision tools from RUKO were therefore used to install the roof window and the external socket.
The ULTIMATECUT step drills were used in the corners of the cut-outs to create exact starting points for the sheet metal nibbler. The step drills enabled controlled drill holes to be made in the body panel and also proved to be indispensable for cable bushings and the auxiliary heater.
The FLOWSTEP® tip proved to be particularly helpful, enabling precise positioning without centre punching and at the same time ensuring rapid drilling progress.
This is precisely why Tom and David relied on RUKO solutions for the critical work steps.
The following RUKO tools, among others, were used for the various work steps:
- ULTIMATECUT step drill for clean drill holes in the body panel
- Twist drill with FLOWSTEP® tip for precise positioning
- Deburrer for clean and safe edges
- Countersinks for flush screw connections in interior fittings
Precise realisation of roof rack, electrics and drop-down bed
The self-constructed roof rack required numerous holes to be drilled in aluminium and steel profiles. This is where the twist drills with FLOWSTEP® tip came into their own.
The precise centring made the work considerably easier and saved valuable time during the tight installation period.
Clean working was also crucial when enlarging the partition opening after removing the glass pane. With the deburring tools from RUKO, the sharp edges of the sheet metal could be neatly processed and safely removed.
When installing the lifting bed, twist drills and countersinks were also used to screw the load-bearing structure flush and stably to the vehicle.
This demonstrated throughout the entire project how important the right choice of tools is for safe and high-quality work results.
The endurance test: 6,200 kilometres of freedom
The maiden voyage in summer 2025 showed that the precise work on the expansion paid off.
With three people and their surfboards in tow, they set off on a 22-day journey through Portugal and Spain. From the cliffs in Nazaré to the streets of Lisbon and Porto to the beaches of Lagos and Peniche, the Crafter mastered the 6,200-kilometre route along the Atlantic coast with ease.
Thanks to the self-sufficient power supply and the well thought-out space concept, the van was far more than just a means of transport - it became a real home on wheels.
The project impressively demonstrates how a van can be turned into a customized off-road camper with planning, craftsmanship and precise tools.
Precision that moves
A campervan conversion places high demands on planning, materials and tools. Precise results and reliable tools are particularly important when working on the bodywork, electrics and load-bearing structures.
The tools from RUKO supported Tom and David in numerous critical work steps - from clean cable feed-throughs and precise drill holes to flush screw connections in the interior fittings.
Step by step, a VW Crafter 4Motion was transformed into a customized off-road camper, ready for new adventures throughout Europe.
